A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) is an education provider registered by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) or a state/territory regulator to deliver nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET). RTOs must meet strict quality standards to maintain their registration, ensuring students receive quality training that leads to recognised qualifications. RTOs can be private colleges, TAFE institutes, universities, or enterprise-based trainers.
To verify an RTO's legitimacy, check their registration status on this directory or on the official training.gov.au website. A legitimate RTO will have a current "Active" status, a valid RTO code, and qualifications listed in their scope of registration. Be cautious of providers who cannot provide their RTO code or whose registration has expired. You can also check with ASQA directly if you have concerns about a training provider.
RTOs can only deliver qualifications that are listed in their "scope of registration." This includes Certificates I-IV, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, Graduate Certificates, and skill sets. Each qualification code (like BSB50420 for Diploma of Leadership and Management) must be specifically approved for that RTO. Before enrolling, always verify that your chosen qualification is on the RTO's current scope by using our directory's search function.
