TAFE fees set to rise

FEES will rise for thousands of Victorians doing vocational training courses as a result of state government funding cuts. Under the changes, a freeze on fees for apprentices will be lifted, resulting in costs rising by between $100 and $200.

Teenagers pulling plug on trades
 
TEENAGERS are turning their backs on many traditional trades such as hairdressing, plumbing and carpentry, because appalling wages force them to live at home longer.
 
The struggling building industry is hoping that a surprisingly strong increase in building consents signals a turn in its fortunes. Building consents for new housing surged 17 per cent in August from the same month last year, outstripping market expectations of a small fall.

AUSTRALIAN tradespeople are among the best in the world. When the Team Australia Skillaroos compete at the 41st WorldSkills international competition at the ExCeL exhibition and convention centre in London next week, they will be aiming to improve on the nation's ranking of fifth in the world.

National Skills Week will be held 1 – 8 October 2011 to provide Australians with information about skills training. Learning by doing is just as important as academic learning as there are many paths to success.

Financial information for 2010 for Australia’s public vocational education and training (VET) system has been released by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER).


Schools in disadvantaged communities or with a large number of students from lower socio-economic backgrounds will receive priority funding under the next round of Trade Training Centres (TTCs), Minister for School Education Peter Garrett said today.

The Federal Government today launched a $558 million fund which will provide 130,000 Australians with the opportunity to learn new skills for jobs in sectors suffering from critical skill shortages.

Scrap employer incentives: new report

COMMONWEALTH incentive payments for 'existing worker traineeships' would be scrapped, with the savings used to "leverage" employer co-funding of industry-based training, under proposals endorsed by the Queensland Government.
