Skill sets

Skill sets are a way of publicly identifying logical groupings of units of competency which meet an identified need or industry outcome.   They are not qualifications, rather they provide pathways to qualifications.  While learners can still achieve a full qualification if they wish, the focus is on becoming operationally ready as soon as possible.

Skill sets are particularly important in facilitating the upskilling of existing workers in the workplace, and will provide employers with a clearly defined statement of skills and knowledge the employee has achieved. They will also make it easier for licensing and regulatory authorities to assess whether applicants have attained the necessary skills and knowledge to be granted a licence or become registered.

Skill sets have been developed within CPC08 in consultation with industry. They meet requirements for flexibility in skills development where whole qualifications do not meet the needs of specific groups.

Units of competency

A unit of competency is the specification of knowledge and skill, and the application of that knowledge and skill, to the standard of performance expected in the workplace.  A unit of competency is the smallest unit that can be assessed and recognised.

 Assessment guidelines

The Assessment Guidelines are an endorsed component of a Training Package. They provide an industry framework to ensure all assessments meet industry needs and nationally agreed standards as expressed in the Training Package. The Assessment Guidelines must be followed to ensure the integrity of assessment leading to nationally recognised qualifications.

The latest Assessment Guidelines for CPP07 can be accessed via the NTIS at www.ntis.gov.au

Assessment details for individual units of competency are provided in the ‘Evidence Guide’ section of each unit, also accessible via the NTIS.
