Security System Consultant - Martin's Story

Martin Legge

Martin is the Manager of Sales and Consulting at ART Security. His work involves managing the sales of electronic alarm systems, CCTV and access controls. He oversees all aspects of the sales department - managing the pricing of their products, the development of brochures and arranging appointments with clients. He enjoys being hands on in the sales area and also does appointments with clients.

Electronic security is always in demand. People want security to protect their business premises or homes. CCTV is an ever evolving technology as far as securing premises. Access control is also very exciting, as it’s about providing the client a means of control, on who can access certain parts of buildings.

The challenges in his job are more to do with the ever changing technology - for example, going from analog cameras to digital cameras. So, it’s about embracing the changes in technology, learning about it and getting a good handle on it, in order to explain the systems to their clients.

There are no sales courses specialising in electronic security. Martin came into the security industry about 20 years ago with a sales background and learnt on the job about security systems and equipment. He was provided with opportunities to practise on electronic panels and learnt from the technical manager about the technology that supported the alarms they were selling.

A consultant selling electronic security systems and equipment needs hands on experience in how their systems work. For example, what a passive infra- red detector is, what it does, how it operates, and the technology behind it. They need to understand it, in order to explain how the system works to their clients. It would be good if sales training included a component on basic technology training. It’s important to understand the technology behind electronic security.

He enjoys working in electronic security. He’s done quite a few sales and management courses and is currently completing the Certificate IV in Risk Management.

From his perspective, it’s a great company with a family atmosphere about it. They provide a professional and personalised service to clients and aim to do the job right.

The industry is ever evolving and has a good future, because security will always be a necessity. There are excellent career opportunities, especially for young people interested in electronics and IT. The industry is always looking for new blood and new ideas.
