Risk Management Security Consultant - Maurizio's Story
Maurizio is the Managing Director of Witches In Britches, a theatre restaurant he has been running since 1990. While there has not been any significant security incident at the restaurant, Maurizio decided to commission a security risk assessment to improve the overall “health and well being” of his business and premises.
Paul and Llewellyn carried out the security risk assessment audit and met with Maurizio to discuss their findings and present their report. Paul explained to Maurizio that the business scored a grade C in the risk assessment rating.
In their discussion, Paul focuses on those areas where there was little or no evidence presented of a risk management process and suggests a number of steps that can be taken immediately to reduce his risk assessment rating and move the rating to a grade B.
Examples of immediate steps included:
- Obtaining a copy of his security operations company's current public liability insurance cover, as well as a copy of their standards audit
- Having job descriptions for all Witches In Britches staff to ensure staff accountability and responsibility
- Putting in place an asset register and maintenance logbook to ensure that essential elements of the business are regularly monitored
- Instigating testing processes to ensure that staff skills and knowledge are up to date for licensing and legislation purposes
- Becoming a member of ASIAL and a member of a Hospitality Association to keep up to date with changes in legislation
- Monitoring his premises to mitigate risks such as fire or break in
- Establishing emergency evacuation management procedures and having staff regularly practise the procedures
- Carrying out a hazards check each day before opening the premises to the public
- Installing additional CCTVs over the tills, in the main venue and in street areas to pick up some existing blackspots
- Monitoring passive detectors quarterly using a dial up or GPRS system, with the smoke detectors keyed into the same system
Installing a breathalyser machine as an intoxication and risk management strategy.
Maurizio was pleased with the in depth security risk assessment report and the opportunity to action the strategies recommended for immediate improvement.
