Essential Skills for a Security Consultant - Risk Management

  • First and foremost, you need the analytical skills necessary to evaluate risk, draw up detailed risk assessment plans and design security systems that respond to client needs. Leadership and negotiation skills are also critical since you are responsible for negotiating with clients about implementing the risk management plans you present to them.
  • As a team leader, you need high level communications skills and cultural sensitivity. In this role you are responsible for modelling ethical and responsible behaviour, providing guidance to team members and making the most effective use of their skills and strengths.
  • You need to apply complex problem solving techniques to the design of systems and the diagnosis of faults. As a consultant, you are expected to make major improvements to security solutions and to devise cost effective approaches.
  • You need to be familiar with legislative, regulatory and licensing requirements and all codes and standards relevant to the electronic security industry.
  • You are responsible for upgrading your own skills and knowledge and supporting the professional development of your team members.
