Career pathway for Monitoring Centre Operator
Work in a monitoring centre is similar to call centre work, except it occurs in the security industry. So if you have call centre experience, you would find it fairly familiar. It does not involve any danger or direct contact with field incidents.
The sample qualifications give you an indication of the skills needed for this work, but, in reality, you don't need a qualification to get a job in a monitoring centre. So there is no barrier if you are the right sort of person. Because monitoring centres operate 24 hours, there are openings for both full-time and casual workers and different shifts are available.

This work can be an end in itself for mature people. Many younger people consider it ideal to combine with other responsibilities such as family commitments or studying. Most employers encourage you to achieve the competencies and to complete a skill set of a qualification while you are working.
Monitoring centre work can also open up a range of possibilities in the expanding electronic security field. You could move across to control room operations, or become a supervisor in this area. With your customer service skills and experience in the electronic security industry you could move into sales and become a security consultant. If you have an interest in the technical side of things, you could go into installation or the integration of security systems with computer networks. If you are interested in management or want to run young own electronic security business, you should consider a course in risk management – this involves working with clients to determine the level of security they need.
