Essential Skills for Control Room Operators

  • In the event of an emergency, you will be required to report to senior staff, to keep calm and continue to communicate. You must be decisive and assertive when directing others in situations where a quick response is required.
  • You need literacy and communication skills sufficient to be able to read and understand procedures, guidelines and instructions, and to accurately record and report on incidents.
  • You will work in a team, and be expected to contribute to work that is within the scope of your job. You are expected to seek feedback when in doubt and, where appropriate, to lead, support and coach others.
  • You will be working with electronic equipment and operating computer software.
  • You need to be reliable and turn up ready to focus and concentrate, and be alert so that you can respond immediately when an incident occurs.
  • You need problem solving skills to determine the most appropriate response to an incident and be able to focus on constructively resolving conflict in any situation that arises. You must also be prepared to use lawful defensive means to protect yourself and others.
  • You will be dealing with customers a great deal, so your customer service, verbal communication and inter-personal skills are most important.
  • You will be expected to respond to changing circumstances, to monitor your own performance and contribute ideas on how to improve work processes.
