Licensing Requirements
Please note that information provided here is intended to be used as a guide only and may not be comprehensive or current. Users must contact regulators in their jurisdiction for up-to-date licensing information.
There are no national licensing requirements for individuals working in the Waste Management Sector. Waste management facilities (landfills, transfer stations, resource recovery facilities, waste processing plants, some transport systems etc) are licensed in each state and territory by the respective environmental protection authority. These licenses place restrictions on the amount of material that can be received, the types of material that can be received, and the emissions that are permitted to the receiving environment. Licenses are for specific facilities and in the name of the owner/operator.
In addition, companies and personnel engaged in waste management are covered by legislation or regulations concerning aspects of their activities, including environmental, industrial and occupational health and safety matters.
These pages provide guidance on licensing requirements for each state and territory based on information sourced from the relevant website for each regulator:
Remember you must contact or visit the websites of individual regulators to confirm licensing requirements in your state or territory.

This includes the transport, handling, storage, treatment and disposal of waste, as well as activities that produce certain types of waste. However there is a range of other legislation relevant to the waste and resource recovery industry.
A contractor who has his own business working for a larger business must apply for an environmental licence.
